Winter hiking on the sun terrace above Lake Lucerne.
Hiking suggestions
The classic tour of Mt. Rigi
Rigi Kulm - Staffel - Staffelhöhe - Känzeli - Rigi Kaltbad, 1 hour, 3 kms
This gentle walk offers gorgeous views of Central Switzerland and the Alps. A lot of pleasure for little effort, since the path leads gently downhill. In her diary, Queen Victoria has commented favourably upon the spectacular view of Lucerne and its charming lake when she visited the viewpoint of Känzeli in 1868.
Panoramic winter trail
Rigi Kaltbad - First - Unterstetten - Rigi Scheidegg, 2 hours, 7 kms
This tour, following the track bed of the ancient Rigi-Scheidgg railway, offers astonishing panoramic views. It passes over old bridges and through a short tunnel. A former passenger coach - now used as a holiday home - stands near Unterstetten. At Rigi Scheidegg, a restaurant invites you to a relaxing rest on the sun terrace. The aerial cable car brings you down to Kräbel - Goldau.
Hiking with a view
Rigi Kulm - Kulmhütte - Schwändihütte - Rigi Klösterli, 1 hour, 3.7 kms
Here's a useful suggestion for those who like to walk off the beaten track. Above the tree line, there's an unhindere view of the rockslide area on Mt. Rossberg. In 1806 more than 20 million cubic metres of rock broke free and buried the village of Goldau. The lower section of this tour passes through unspoilt winter landscapes and through fairy-tale-like snow covered forests.
Relaxing promenade
Rigi Kaltbad - First - Heiri Hütte - Rigi Klösterli, 30 minutes, 1.8 kms
The first section of this gentle walk offers great panoramic views of the Swiss Alps. The path then leads slightly downhill to the Heiri Hütte, a cosy mountain restaurant. Here you cen enjoy a hearty farmer's snack or a glass of invigorating Rigi brandy. Many Capuchin monks once dwelt at Rigi Klösterli. Only one of them still lives there today. You can meet him in the gorgeous baroque chapel named "Mary of the Snows".
