Portrait Vitznau
Vitznau
Vitznau lies nestled between two elements of natural beauty, Mount Rigi and Lake Lucerne, which both dominate the landscape of Central Switzerland and contribute enormously to the popularity of the region.
At the end of the 19th century a piece of technical history was written in Vitznau when on the 21st of May 1871 the first ever cog railway went into operation. Vitznau also takes the lead when it comes to the history of the boats on Lake Lucerne, the first paddle steamers were built in Vitznau in 1872. Even though Vitznau with its 1000 inhabitants is a very small village, it still has several popular attractions: the first ever artillery fortress in Switzerland, the world's largest Swiss flag, as well as the oldest dancing hall in Switzerland, consisting of an old cave which can be hired for parties and events for up to 400 people.
