The Swiss Flag
Vitznau
The largest ever Swiss flag flies high above Vitznau every summer.
In the year 2000, under the initiation of the tourist office in Vitznau, it was decided that a 25 m x 25 m Swiss flag be assembled on the cliff face Steigelfadbalm-Dossen of Mount Rigi to celebrate Swiss National Day. A perfect location for all to see on one of Switzerland's most popular mountains. Every year since 2001 a larger flag has been assembled on the same spot (30 m x 30 m) to joy of the holiday makers and the proud Swiss! According to locals in Vitznau the flag represents creativity, courage and challenge.
The flag
The flag is made out of a special material which enables it to withstand the extreme changes in temperature and the ferocious gale force winds on the cliff face. Six separate pieces are assembled together to make up the flag. The total weight of the flag is c. 400 Kg.
