Weggis a paradise of roses
Weggis
The legendary Rose Festival has been celebrated in Weggis since 1926. With the exception of 6 years during the second world war the Rose Festival has taken place every year.
In the year 2000 a special rose was cultivated and named "Weggis" and a "Rose March" was composed by Napoleon Cattaneo and George Cosé.
The history of the Rose festival starts in 1925 when a number of local young men returned from the Narcissus festival in Montreux with a similar idea for Weggis. This idea became reality when in 1925 the first ever Rose Ball took place in Weggis, it was a huge success. In 1931 The "Club der Harmlosen", the founders of the festival, decided to include a huge parade of floral floats to the festival. Each year the festival became more popular. In 1937 the local tourist office took over the organisation of the festival and nowadays the Rose Festival Committee is responsible for it.
