Rigi Alpine Wrestling Festival
8th July 2012
The alpine wrestlers, farmers, locals and spectators celebrate a traditional annual festival on Mt. Rigi. The wonderful surroundings and the attractive programme of accompanying events, including an alpine procession just add to the atmosphere.
In this kind of wrestling, the two competitors circle each other in an open ring covered with sawdust. The winner, according to the rules, is the one who brushes the sawdust off his opponent's back. The competition on Mt. Rigi takes place in a natural alpine arena with panoramic views of the Alps.
Apart from wrestling, there are other Alpine games, such as stone throwing (where participants from the canton of Schwyz usually excel), pole climbing, various uphill races and much more. Other activities on this colourful day include a procession of cattle up the mountain, bedecked with flowers and heavy cowbells.
